ABOUT US
Who We Are
Founded in 2007, Zouk Nation is a nonpartisan organization based in New York City dedicated to helping incur the growth of zouk dancing and the appreciation of zouk music in the United States.
Exactly What It is We Do
From the beginning the group realized that if the Brazilian zouk scene is to have any hope of growing here in the United States, then there are essentially four problems that need to be addressed
1. There are no venues to dance zouk.
2. You currently can’t buy the music in the U.S.
3. The insufficient number of zouk instructors currently residing in the U.S.
4. What we like to call the “What the hell is it” factor, which refers to the fact the majority of people in the U.S. have no idea what zouk is.
As a result, everything that Zouk Nation does is to address one of these problems.
For instance, in regards to the fact there is no place to dance zouk, Zouk Nation has been actively building relationships with bars, clubs and local businesses around New York City in order to create more venues to dance.
The fact one can’t buy the music in the U.S. has led Zouk Nation to create the first podcast dedicated solely to zouk and to launch the Zouk Music Distribution Project, a program which provides all the zouk community leaders in the U.S and Canada with free zouk music.
In addressing the fact the majority of people in the U.S have no idea what zouk is, what it all boils down to is simply educating people. As a result, a large part of the Zouk Nation website is dedicated to providing information about zouk, including an overview of both the dance and the music and the Zouk Instructor Directory and the Zouk Artist Directory. And coming in 2011 the Zouk DJ Directory!
As for fact that there simply aren’t enough zouk instructors in the U.S., Zouk Nation works with a number of zouk instructors overseas, in order to help make it easier for them to come here and teach in the States.
