ABOUT US

Who We Are

Founded in 2007, Zouk Nation is a nonpartisan organization based in New York City dedicated to helping incur the growth of zouk dancing and the appreciation of zouk music in the United States.

The Group’s Goal

From the beginning the group realized that the zouk scene is going to grow in the United States, then there are essentially four problems that need to be addressed

1. You currently can’t buy the music in the U.S.

2. There is no place to dance.

3. The “What the hell is it” factor. The fact the majority of people in the U.S. have no idea what zouk is.

4. The insufficient number of zouk instructors currently residing in the U.S.

As a result, it was decided that everything that Zouk Nation does should addresses one of these problems. For example, the fact one can’t buy the music here, has led Zouk Nation, with the help of zouk artists from overseas, to creating a podcast in order to give more exposure to some of the amazing zouk music that is out there. The fact there’s no place to dance, Zouk Nation has been actively building relationships with bars and clubs around New York, such as Lava Gina in the East Village, to give zouk dancers a place they can dance. In regards to the fact that the general public has no idea what zouk is, it’s a matter of educating the public. As a result, the group focuses a large portion of its time and energy in creating more venues where zouk dancing can be learned and staging more public events where it can be seen. In addressing the fact that there simply aren’t enough zouk instructors in the U.S., Zouk Nation is actively looking for zouk instructors who’d be interested in coming to New York to teach a workshop.

More About The Podcast

As of this writing, zouk music remains largely unavailable to the North American consumer. In order to bring greater exposure to zouk recording artists and their music Zouk Nation has launched a podcast. It is hoped that by offering a regular broadcast of zouk music, it will create an ongoing base of listeners and, should the numbers become large enough, create enough of demand that it will put pressure on North American retailers to begin carrying zouk music in their various outlets. You can learn more about the podcast by going to the faq page on the music section of this site.

In Conclusion

Any zouk recording artist interested in having their music broadcast on the Zouk Nation podcast, or any zouk instructor interested in teaching zouk in New York is encouraged to contact the offices of Zouk Nation by email at onezouknation@gmail.com.
